Newman town was originally constructed to house the workforce for the iron ore mine located on nearby Mt Whaleback. The town was raised from the red dirt desert of the Pilbara and many of the residents reflect on those experiences in the early days, as the town evolved from its early beginnings

In this podcast Pauline speaks glowingly of her staff and how many of them went on to become leaders in their own right. She also recalls the creative ways she used to get the message to the parents about the introduction of Unit Curriculum at the High School. These included interviews on 6NEW and joining in sporting groups eg Netball and Tennis, She remembers the visit of the Governor to Newman and how he proclaimed a holiday for all the schools! She also discussed the fires that happened around town - including the football clubs and the attempts at the High School and South Newman PS.

In this podcast Pauline Coghlan describes her arrival in Newman in 1987, having been appointed as Principal of the High School. She especially recalls the beauty of the land around Newman and a wonderful sense of community that extended beyond the school community.  She also described her role as Principal which covered the curriculum, the people in her care and interacting with the broader community. She also mentions how significant it was to have the Rec centre built during her time in Newman - and especially the role played by Dennis Hodge.

In this podcast Michael Turner, in conversation with Lisa Rickert and Leith from present day 6NEW, describes some of the characters he encountered in Newman, and  the currency of Newman -  beer cans! He recalls the tough working conditions in the early days, and the resilience required to stay there. He mentions two things that made a difference - the sealing of the road to Meekatharra and the introduction of the coaxial cable - both of which made Newman less isolated. He also describes his job as a payroll clerk and how the payroll system worked. His final message was that Newman was not so much about the facilities, but about the people!

He tells of how football was such an important part of the fabric of the town, and gave people an opportunity to meet others outside their normal work circle of friends. He played a major role as the trainer of the presenters, as he was the only one in town with any online radio experience. He remembers the first broadcast when he was on air live. He also remembers the names of many of the presenters and the style of music they played. He discusses the techie people who made it all happen and tells about NEWR9 TV station. He also recalls the first telephones in Newman.

He remembers his first impressions of the town and recalls many of the different facilities that were available then. He also discusses the lack of availability of TV and radio, which often led to a feeling of isolation.
