Newman town was originally constructed to house the workforce for the iron ore mine located on nearby Mt Whaleback. The town was raised from the red dirt desert of the Pilbara and many of the residents reflect on those experiences in the early days, as the town evolved from its early beginnings

The major influences, as noted by Peter, were the influence of Pauline Coghlan as his Principal, and developing curriculum and behaviour management programs in the school. But he also enjoyed cruising down the Fortescue River on blow up mattresses when the rain came! They both fondly recall the Bush BBQs, the clarity of the stars at night, and the ease of washing!!
