Newman town was originally constructed to house the workforce for the iron ore mine located on nearby Mt Whaleback. The town was raised from the red dirt desert of the Pilbara and many of the residents reflect on those experiences in the early days, as the town evolved from its early beginnings

In this podcast Ann Collins, in conversation with Lisa Rickert, recalls  how she and her husband Peter arrived in Newman, via Onslow and Port Hedland, to start the first supermarket in Newman, She describes the town and includes experiences such as going to Church, and ordering groceries via Bechtel. She also remembers the beginnings of the first golf course out near the old Mt Newman homestead. One of the highlights of the early years was the arrival of many royal visitors, including The Duke of Edinburgh, Princess Anne and Princess Margaret and Lord Snowdon.

Then he was eventually able to hire a caravan which enabled him to bring his young family to town. He recalls his journey up with his wife and  two young children, which was an adventure in itself!

They also discuss the NSHS 50th anniversary which is coming up this year. One of his vivid memories is of pictures of the NSHS students riding to Kumarina. They both discuss the different perceptions of Newman now - which can depend on whether you actually live there. Anthony loves the community events that happen around the town square, and finishes off with an encouragement to get involved and make things happen!

She also remembers when the Lennon Bros Circus came to town and how she used that excursion with her art class. She also reveals some of the harder moments she experienced in Newman and recalls her encounters with bullying and the death of many students during her time there. She concludes with a reflection on the joys of teaching and what a privilege it was.

In this podcast Bronwen Day, in conversation with Lisa Rickert, recalls her many friends who were teachers. One of her best memories was when Adam set fire to a tree at the Fortescue River. She also fondly remembers the beauty of the Pilbara and how the red dirt gets into your blood. She recalls major incidents, including cyclones and the Strike of 1988. She was sad when her Mum and Dad moved on, but she loved Jan Cheeseman who took up the role of baby sitter, so she could remain teaching. One of her favourite memories with her students was when they contacted Roald Dahl.
