Michael Turner Part 4- Characters, Resilience, Sealing of road to Meeka and Coaxial Cable, Payroll

In this podcast Michael Turner, in conversation with Lisa Rickert and Leith from present day 6NEW, describes some of the characters he encountered in Newman, and  the currency of Newman -  beer cans! He recalls the tough working conditions in the early days, and the resilience required to stay there. He mentions two things that made a difference - the sealing of the road to Meekatharra and the introduction of the coaxial cable - both of which made Newman less isolated. He also describes his job as a payroll clerk and how the payroll system worked. His final message was that Newman was not so much about the facilities, but about the people!

Michael Turner Part 2 - Sporting involvement, especially Saints Football Club and NNFL, Prince Charles and Rolf Harris

In this podcast Michael Turner, in conversation with Lisa Rickert recalls his involvement with the Tennis Club and also with Saints Football Club. He tells of how football was such an important part of the fabric of the town, and gave people an opportunity to meet others outside their normal work circle of friends. He also remembers the visits of Prince Charles and Rolf Harris.

In this podcast Michael Turner, in conversation with Lisa Rickert and Leith from present day 6NEW, recalls the earliest beginnings of Radio 6 NEW. He played a major role as the trainer of the presenters, as he was the only one in town with any online radio experience. He remembers the first broadcast when he was on air live. He also remembers the names of many of the presenters and the style of music they played. He discusses the techie people who made it all happen and tells about NEWR9 TV station. He also recalls the first telephones in Newman.

Michael Turner Part 1 - Arrival, First Impressions, facilities, Isolation

In this podcast Michael Turner, in conversation with Lisa Rickert recalls how he came to be in Newman in 1972 from New Zealand. He remembers his first impressions of the town and recalls many of the different facilities that were available then. He also discusses the lack of availability of TV and radio, which often led to a feeling of isolation.

In this podcast Irene  Majid remembers the facilities that were available in Newman when she was there. She tells of her plan to leave town when her children reached High School age. She also recalls the people she remembers well. She outlines the sports  and community groups that she and her children were involved in. She reminisces about the changes in Newman during her time, and the journey from Newman to Perth with her 6 children.

Phil and Jenny Shea Part 4 - Memorable people, Tooth story, Doctors, Comparing wages, Apprentices, Comparison with other towns

In this podcast Phil and Jenny recall people they remembered who shared their journey in Newman. Phil relates the story of his lost tooth! They discuss town Doctors and compare their wages with those who worked for the company. Phil also remembers how hard it was for students to get an apprenticeship, if they were not known within the company. They conclude by comparing Newman with other towns where they had taught.

Phil and Jenny Shea Part 3 - Jenny's jobs, Staffing at NSHS, Catholic Parish Involvement, Facilities in Newman

In this podcast Jenny describes her experience as both a relief and Kindy teacher. Phil talks about the difficulty of balancing young teachers  on staff with those more experienced. They both recall their memories of the Fortescue Festival, and also their involvement in St Joseph's Catholic Parish. Both Phil and Jenny describe the facilities they experienced during their time in Newman.

In this podcast Phil and Jenny discuss their children attending Newman Primary, and the activities they were involved in out of school hours. Phil then describes his job as Deputy Principal at the High School. They also reflect on the major influences on themselves and the town during their two year stay.
