Newman town was originally constructed to house the workforce for the iron ore mine located on nearby Mt Whaleback. The town was raised from the red dirt desert of the Pilbara and many of the residents reflect on those experiences in the early days, as the town evolved from its early beginnings

Deb and John Chambers moved to Newman from South Australia in 1973. They started life in flat E1 on Newman Drive before moving to Jabbarup Crescent. They were both very involved in the Newman Horse and Pony Club and were responsible for virtually setting it up.

Kevin Byleveld came to Newman with his wife Leonie and three children in December 1978 and they left in December 1981. He was posted to Newman  as Officer in Charge of Newman Police Station.His main claim to fame, however, was that he was the main force behind the formation of the Newman Turf Club and the construction of the Newman Race Course.
