Newman town was originally constructed to house the workforce for the iron ore mine located on nearby Mt Whaleback. The town was raised from the red dirt desert of the Pilbara and many of the residents reflect on those experiences in the early days, as the town evolved from its early beginnings

Robert Fuller was sent to Mount Newman  in 1968 to work on the number one ore handling plant for Mount Newman Mining. He worked for a company called Transfield Constructions, and they had tendered on and won the contract via Bechtel Pacific, to build the complete Ore Handling Plant. He was a project engineer on site – being part of the supervisory team with a project manager.
