Newman town was originally constructed to house the workforce for the iron ore mine located on nearby Mt Whaleback. The town was raised from the red dirt desert of the Pilbara and many of the residents reflect on those experiences in the early days, as the town evolved from its early beginnings

He also describes the emotion associated with "Touching the Rock" as the police and then the Newman community file past to remember those who were lost.

He remembers the solemnity and emotion of the ceremony that was held at the site of the accident, and how that carried over into the games that followed. One of the main purposes of the Bloody Slow Games and Ceremony was to re-connect the families with the Police Force and Newman.

The first rugby match was played between the Aussies and the Kiwis in 2005. It was held to commemorate the death of four police officers in a plane crash just outside Newman on January 26th 2001.
