Newman town was originally constructed to house the workforce for the iron ore mine located on nearby Mt Whaleback. The town was raised from the red dirt desert of the Pilbara and many of the residents reflect on those experiences in the early days, as the town evolved from its early beginnings

In this podcast Karen Walters, in conversation with Lisa Rickert,  describes her jobs in Newman. She tells about the arrival of Tyson in 2016 and how it changed their lives.  She outlines why they changed jobs and how it was worked around Tyson's day care at the YMCA. She mentions some of her special friends and "characters", especially Gibbo. She and Reuben were married on the top of Radio Hill and celebrated afterwards at the Speedway! She describes how she assisted Reuben to compete in Speedway, and how she felt scared at his participation. Karen also recalls some highlights from her time in Newman.

She describes what her job entailed and some of the challenges she encountered. She also describes how her team had to clear  the air crash site which was overgrown and remove all the weeds and bring it to pristine condition. She remembers the fire that hit the shire offices, and how many of the maps and local knowledge was lost.

In this podcast Paul, in conversation with Lisa Rickert,  remembers how his family emigrated to Australia from Italy in 1953, after his father had been a Prisoner of War in Australia during WWII. He recalls how he learned his trade as an earth moving machine operator first of all by working in a quarry. He then moved up to Port Hedland, where he honed his skill on the 988 front end loader. He then moved on to Goldsworthy where he describes the very basic life in the camp, before the town was even there.

He also remembers winning the ton of gold prize from the Walkabout! Wolf  describes attending the annual Newman Reunion at Whiteman Park and Paul recalls attending day care centre and having to eat his green vegetables - he thought he was being poisoned.!

In this podcast Wolf's son Paul joins the conversation with Lisa Rickert. Paul grew up in Newman and shares some of his memories. Wolf recalls his involvement with Speedway and Sir Gotcha's team. He remembers when the rubbish tip became full and digging a new one took priority over all other tasks. Wolf was also part of the A shift Social Club which specialised in sending flowers and fruit to the wives of his colleagues, if they ended up in hospital. He was a relieving foreman, so worked across all shifts.

In this podcast Wolf, in conversation with Lisa Rickert,  recalls living in the Bechtel Con Camp - Sufferers' Paradise - and then the early days of the SMQ and the town Mess. He also remembers the early days of the Walkabout Hotel, especially the Animal Bar! He describes the town swimming pool and his involvement in the swimming club, including inter-town swimming carnivals.
