Newman town was originally constructed to house the workforce for the iron ore mine located on nearby Mt Whaleback. The town was raised from the red dirt desert of the Pilbara and many of the residents reflect on those experiences in the early days, as the town evolved from its early beginnings

Bill recalls how he had saved a box full of clippings about the early days of footy and had given them to Des Nugent, who many years later returned that box to Bill - allowing him to construct quite accurately the beginnings of the NNFL.
He also mentions various people who were involved around this time, including Bob Peterson, Barry Hibbens, Mike Roszak, Murray McKenzie and Les Nixon.
